Trends in Male Underwear
It seems that men are finally becoming as conscious of their underwear as women are and that they are paying closer attention to the design and cut of men’s boxers and briefs.
It used to be that men just wore whatever underwear was on sale or that they could grab. Those days have changed. If you buy your boyfriend underwear as a present it is quite likely that one day he will say “you bought the wrong kind.”
In fact men are buying more underwear then ever and making their preferences known. They are even venturing into experimenting with new colors and silhouettes to accommodate changing male fashions such as low-rise jeans.
It used to be you were considered to be quite wild and fashionable if you bought those plaid or solid collared jeans. At Macy’s in New York the biggest trend has seen to be a preference for what are known as men’s “midways.” Midways are similar to boy shorts for women. They are a hybrid of trunks and briefs and come in a great variety of different fabrics including knits and woven fabrics.
The hottest selling color for male underwear now is no longer pedestrian blue or grey or even plain old white. Goth like black has beat all of these colors of male underwear as the number hue.
Jockey International reports that the sales of black underwear over the 2008 Holiday season were up 18 percent compared to 2008. Another best seller for that company is its 3D Innovations line which comes in red, white, black, denim and charcoal with red accents. This is as daring as it still gets. It is rare you will find a man who will put on a pair of pink briefs in a men’s locker room.
Although briefs are sexy and cool there are still a great many men out there who prefer boxers. Many adult men are into printed boxers with cartoon characters on them like Scooby Doo or SpongeBob Square pants. There are basically two kinds of men who like boxers – those who like the plain white ones that make them feel like Carey Grant and those who like ones with loud patterns. Trunks are similar. Basically they are boxer shorts that have been cut very short.
Men are also more concerned with comfort as the wrong pair of underwear can cause misery all day long. Cotton and silk are the most comfortable fabrics for the male crotch area. However cotton is more popular as silk does not make people feel too manly.
The old standby, briefs, also known as tighty whiteys never go out of style and have been worn by men for decades. The only difference is that they are offered more often in dark charcoal or black then they used to be before the arrival of the metrosexual fashion influence.
