Trends in Socks

This year there were many trends in socks but one of the biggest was the big baggy wool socks that were inspired what the school girls wear in Japan. The socks like this for spring are thinner but they are still sexy and knee high in length. On the street or in stores you might just heare this refered to as “super loose socks”. The idea is that once you put the socks on that they do indeed sag a bit so your legs seem thinner.

Another big item is tube socks. These are athletic socks that usually cost about three bucks. The coolest ones are like the ones model Gisele Bundchen recently sported on the cover of GQ magazine. They were white, reached the knee and had several black stripes around the knee band. Black with white stripes is very cool as well. Both colors are usually worn with mini skirts.

Gwen Stefani is another celebrity who wears tube socks. She is known for wearing tube stops with things like lace up platform heels. Stefanie also cuts the toes out of the tube socks to display polished toe nails. The Harajuku Girls, the back up dancers in her stage act, also wore tube socks with their designer running shoes, tutus and British school girl capes. The entire fad actually originated in the Harajuku region of Tokyo which is known for its cutting edge fashion. It is a cutting edge that extended to socks as well.

Mariah Carey also is a big fan of tube socks and has been seen wearing them with the entire foot except for the heel cut off and in high heel running shoes. Yet another devotee of the tube sock style is retro punk singer Avril Lavigne who pulls a black pair with white stripes over sheer stockings and pairs it all with a hoodie and short skirt.

Another trend that comes from Japan are Split Toe Socks. This is actually age old footwear that finds its origins in traditional Asian dress. These socks are actually shoes and meant to be walked in. They have heavy duty rubber soles. Some of them even have steel toes and are worn by Japanese labourers such as carpenters. There is a version of these socks too that are more like sneakers and these are known as jikatabi. They have all of functionality of running shoes but they are much more comfortable. These are usually worn with rolled up jeans.

The ultimate in trendy socks is moisturizing foot socks. Spa Trends makes these type of socks. They provide overnight rejuvenation for rough tired feet. You simply moisturize your feet with peppermint moisturizing cream, slip on the lycra socks and wake up with very soft pampered tootsies in the morning. Not a bad spa treatment for only eleven bucks!
