Gold is Good for the Holiday

This Christmas gold is going to be a very hot trend that extends to every design detail from the shoes on your feet to your dress to your bag. You are going to see touches of gold everywhere this season. Gilded leather, gold lame, sequins, brocades, knits and satins will all be that shiny Las Vegas gold. We have not seen this look become so fierce since the late eighties. Before that it was fashionable to wear gold lame with velvet jackets in the early eighties.
There are some rules for wearing gold simply because it is so flashy. It can literally “outshine” everything else you are wearing. You should never wear it head to toe.You should never wear it on a body part that you do not want brought to attention. For instance do not wrap a gold belt around a pot belly.
Gold looks best when mixed with black and white or flesh colored tones. You can also wear it more casually and mix it with dark denim, leather and other fabrics.
Gold makeup is also in vogue for the holiday season. Prescriptives has made a very special gold powder that looks pink in one light and gold in another. It is called Prescriptives Rainbow Powder Play. Givenchy also makes a gold iridescent powdered that is similar. The Urban Decay Shadow Lounge is also pink and gold at the same time.
A little gold glitter is also coming back into fashion. Soap stores like Lush are putting all kinds of glimmer touches into their soaps and gels so that your skin will really glow. Other cosmetic companies are also following the trend and putting a bit of gold dust in their bath products.
On the runway gold was seen in all kinds of guises. One piece jumpsuits with bear arms and keyhole necks (reminiscent of Sharon Stone in Casino) were on the runways. Baby doll dresses with mesh sleeves and mini dresses and tops with long bell sleeves also made their glitzy presence know. Gold cotton tops lined with shiny gold ribbon and long satin gowns are also going to be seen on the cocktail wear scene.
You could probably top up any outfit with a touch of gold jewelry to look as cool as possible. Solid gold earrings that are thick and solid looking are back as is those drooping long chains that were so popular in the eighties. In fact wearing several chains around the waist is very Chanel.
The key to “doing” gold correctly is to never overdo it. Another key is to not wear any jewelry (and especially gold jewelry) if you are already paving yourself in gold in the form of something like a gold leather jacket or gold lame skirt.

Last Minute Party Plans

Want to make yourself fashion fierce for that big party but you only have a few minutes before you have to jump into the cab. Here are some glam ideas that can help get you out the door fast and to your destination faster.

All you need is a glittery top in your closet and you can transform all sorts of pedestrian outfits into more exciting ones. Be sure to search far in the back recesses of your closets to find that lurex top or gold lame piece. Gold is a very fashionable color for this holiday season.  The color platinum, which is like a very pale gold, is even more fashionable.

If it is an office party you are going to then you might want to wear a lurex top beneath a black jacket. This gives you a more polished or sophisticated look. Another sophisticated look is the cowl neck sweater with leather pants. Velvet drawstring pants can also add instant glamour to any look.  In fact anything that is velvet makes you look like you are ready to party.  As it is Christmas you can try for red or green velvet.  Don’t wear both red and green velvet together or you might look like a Christmas elf. Instead wear one or other to achieve the look that you are after.

You can also dress up an outfit with a gag. Choose shoes, wraps, necklaces and handbags that are shiny and glitzy. You can wear a group of crystal necklaces grouped together or a simple big red bow in your head or mules that have big sparkling jewels on them. The idea is to be as elegant by only wearing one or two pieces of jeweler.  You don’t have to decorate yourself too much or you will end up looking like a Christmas tree.

Don’t worry if you can’t afford real jewels. Costume jewelry is very acceptable at Christmas. Just one big faux jewel or old vintage brooch can do the trick. It is especially charming to wear a vintage brooch in a Christmas motif such as a candy cane, Christmas tree or Christmas present.

Another way to say it is Christmas and also put you in the mood to socialize is to wear a warm spicy perfume. One that is cinnamon, vanilla or sandalwood based is warm and spicy in nature and also very sexy!

A cheap way to transform your look is simply to wear glam make up. You can transform yourself into a beauty in five minutes simply by applying lush red lips, smoky eyes and a glittering face powder.  Be sure to curl your lashes and apply foundation so your skin looks flawless. You can also get away with wearing a little more rouge than usual in the winter.

Beads Lace and Yarn for Weddings

One of the biggest themes for this winter s once again going to be the white wedding. It might be more correct to say that these are cream or off-white weddings. However unlike last season where everything was very medieval this season everything will be very Victorian in nature. You can expect to see gown in shades of oat, caramel and cream and decorated with pearls and lace. Crocheted items and knitted flowers are also part of this wedding fashion trend as are shoes and hems embellished with fine embroidery.  Boots too can be embellished with fine stitching.

This is left over from the trends towards more romantic and frilly weddings which was a really hot t a few years ago. The hot colors then were the browns, golds and blood reds.  This current look is more delicate and fairy like in nature. The gowns are very much like something you would see in a neo-classic painting.

Glamorous touches of lace and seed pearls carry over into everything including the tablecloths, flower vases and the slipcovers for the bride and groom’s chairs. Even the wedding flowers on the table can include plastic strands with seed pearls at the ends mixed with pale colored blossoms.

Even your wedding invitation can be decorated with white velvet ribbons, pearls, lace and bows made of yarns.  You can also give your wedding menus the same kind of Victorian treatment by decorating them with velvets, beads and laces.

As for yarn a couple of performance artists recently made the news when they knitted everything for the wedding including the bride’s dress and the groom’s suit. Every object was a masterpiece of knitting and looked like a fair imitation of gifts and things that you would normally find at a wedding.

This innovative also asked their guests to submit knitted gifts so that everything could be included in a book that they are going to publish called “The Knitted Wedding.”  Curiously everything that was knitted was done in white yarn so that this couple could have a white wedding that was completely made out of yarn.

If this idea appeals to you in any way the knitting patterns for all kinds of amusing wedding related objects are posted online.  You can download Microsoft word documents that contain directions for knitting such things as flowers, doves, candles, buds, leafs and even sandwiches. These can also be embellished with lace, creamy satin and velvet bows and seed pearls.

Even if you do not relish the idea of doing your entire wedding in yarn you might enjoy adding a few knitted touches to your celebration to give it a unique touch. Of course you don’t have to do this wedding all in white. You can do the lace and bead theme in another color such as light pink, lavender or even yellow!

Dr. Seuss Colors

If you want to look fierce this winter then be sure to take advantage of one of the hottest fall trends which is for patterned stockings. Patterned hosiery comes in all kinds of different styles including thigh highs, knee highs, Capri style leggings and ankle socks.

Patterned tights come in all kinds of different styles. Every single type of leopard print is in style as are cheetah and zebra prints.  Plaids and polka dots also never seem to go out of style. The main difference this year is that tights are no longer black or navy blue but  more fashion fierce if they are in the brown, orange or yellow color schemes.

Opaque tights are a winter favorite because they keep you warm and cozy and go with every outfit.  You can get these tights in a shiny or matte finish and in every color imaginable. If you want something really warm then you might want to invest in a pair of wool tights.  For maximum elegance you can get super soft opaque tights that are made out of a fabric called Velveteen. Velveteen tights come in all kinds of different patterns as well as exotic colors like bitter chocolate, royal purple and bright orange.

Not all tights have feet.  Footless tights are versatile items. They can be worn beneath pants to keep you trimmer or warmer. They look great with a skirt. You can pull a pair of socks on to keep your feet warmer than if you were only going to wear tights.

Support hose now also comes in all kinds of patterns and colors including plaids, stripes, checks, ribbons and exotic solid colors such as Aubergine or Daffodil Yellow.

If you feel hot and sweaty in tights then you might want to try the La Perla Tomorrow 50 Opaque tights. They are expensive but they are very soft which allows your skin to breathe more.

There are also many other types of unique tights. You can go for the wet look tights by Aristoc. Your legs have never been so shiny! The thing is that these tights are such scene stealers that they really do not go that well with anything but black.  Black velvet looks great with these wet look tights.

If you would like a pattern that resembles a large patterned tattoo then you might want to check out the fashion offerings of the company named Be baroque. These are cream colored tights with dark drawings on them.

If wild psychedelia is your favorite type of tights design then you will love any of the patterns put out by Celeste Stein. She makes black and white optic patterns that look a bit like the old Spirograph patterns.  Another favorite is her brown and orange print of the Beatles. Other motifs on her patterned tights include decks of playing cards, snake skin and Vroom comics.

New Fashion Buzzwords

Fashion has a new lingo all of its own. For instance you don’t say that something is trendy any more. You say its “on trend” instead. If clothes are really hot you say they are “dope” or “fierce.” In fact that is how this blog got its name- Fashion Fierce. Fierce also has another implication because of a blog online called Fierce Fashion. That term is sometimes used to refer to clothing for lesbian and gay individuals. The exact meaning of fierce might depend on where you are living in the world.
Where is all this lingo coming from? Many say it is the influence of fashion television that is changing the language of fashion. It is shows like Project Runway and America’s Top Model that are teaching us new ways of talking about the clothes we like. In fact it was probably Tyra Banks, the host of America’s Next Top Model who helped to popularize the term “fierce.” The winner of Project Runway, Christian Siriano, also used the word a lot when he was on the show and helped to immerse it in the common vernacular.
Bloggers, fashionistas and marketers of fashion have also had some say in what words are appropriate lingo. Look at any advertising copy and you will see all kinds of references to the phrases we see flung around on reality television shows.
According to a Reuters story at Canada.com, Tim Gunn (one of the hosts of Project Runway) says that the words “chic”, “polished” and “sophisticated” will always be part of the way we talk about fashion. He has actually coined a phrase that tipped and is now in common usage. It is the famous “make it work.” Gunn also says that “on trend” is the hip phrase to use instead of “trendy”. He is also very personally fond of the word “stunning.”
Paris Hilton’s famous compliment – “that’s hot” is also still hot. So are the words “lovely” and “amazing.” “Glammitt” is another popular phrase. You can augment it even further might saying “Dammit that’s Glammit!”
If you think something is ugly or in bad taste it is now hot to say that it is “prune.” As in “that pair of Crocs is really prune!” It can also refer to a garment that is sewn very badly.
The term “chic” is likely to continue its popularity as the famous labels it is closely associated with, such as Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, as an affirmation about elegance.
There are definitely some words that just not that chic anymore. The word “rad” doesn’t really work anymore as an expression of personal approval. The word bling is also very much on its way out and reminiscent of the era when Paris Hilton used to hang with P. Diddy.

Celebrities to Imitate This Season

According to Style Magazine you can never go wrong dressing like your favorite celebrity icon.
A celebrity icon who is fashionable this fall is Bianca Jagger. She was famous for wearing a tube shaped black mini skirt with a strapless peplum top that has a flare at the bottom. Striped tops, especially black and white ones stippled with sequins are very much a Bianca Jagger type signature look.
Another look is the patrician look boasted by Charlotte Rampling in her movies in the seventies. This was a checkered jacket with wide lapels and patch pockets. Vests, plaid button down vests and long pants also fit the bill. This look is capped off with a saucy red beret and a generous array of ringlets.
Silk brocades decorated with masses of flowers is also a big trend. Think of the loud Chinese silk dresses that used to be worn by poor little rich girl Gloria Vanderbilt in the seventies. Choose a mandarin style short dress and top off the look by wearing white or black suede or leather gloves.
It is also fashionable to go way back in time to the era of Greta Garbo when three quarter sleeves, fabric belts with big buckles and cowl necks were in style. It is in the name of this famous silent film style that you will see some devotees of fashion wearing turbans this fall as well. These turbans fit very close to the head and are sometimes embellished with a single large brooch.
We also owe a second popular trend to Garbo’s elegant ways this fall as well. This would be the long floor length coat, or what used to be simply be called a maxi coat in the seventies. Wide leg pants are also another Garbo trend. This style is going to be very popular in grey this fall.
The eighties era Queen of Fashion was Paloma Picasso who wore long flowing garments. The pants were baggie and the tops were skimpy. Sometimes she also wore a long flowing cape to complete the look. Of course this fashion look is also not complete without long talon like nails and gold jewelery to go with it.
Jane Birken was a bit of a flower child, but a mournful looking one in the eighties. Her look was dramatic but also very minimalist at the same time. She word long black flowing dresses that look like they would flatter Emily Bronte. A cool variation of this look is a black top with leather leggings. Black tights worn with black patent leather or black velveteen high heel shoes are also going to be in vogue as are Mary Jane style shoes worn with black knee high socks. Dresses tend to have delicate curves that show a bit of bosom. Another signature of the Jane Birken style is the little ribbon tie with a keyhole cut out near the breasts.

The Cable Sweater for Fall

You might be pleased to find out that cable knit sweaters are back in fashion for fall and winter 2008. That is because cable sweaters have that seventies and eighties retro look… It is good news for most of us because almost everyone tends to have at least one of these stashed away in their closet. They just haven’t been in fashion for a while possibly because they are so form fitting.
There are a couple of different types of cable sweaters. One kind is a total pullover. The other kind is a sweater that buttons up the front. Yet another kind just has a plaque with a few buttons or a zipper. The zipper is not the coolest fastening for a cable sweater. The very nicest ones tend to have those thick brown rounded buttons that are segmented like a turtle shell. The highest quality buttons are brown and actually made of leather. However to keep costs down most of these buttons are made of plastic. The buttons on these cable sweaters also come in black, whale bone and as gold medallions.
The newest innovation for this design is the cable poncho. This is an outfit that is very seventies or early eighties as well. There are thick cable patterns all over this draped item. It looks great with a buttery pair of tan colored gloves. The most fashionable color is gray but camel, cream, oat and brown colored cable sweaters are also very fashionable for this fall.
These sweater never tend to be handmade because that makes them very expensive. However there are lots of knitting patterns on the market that can be accessed if you want to make your cable sweater. These are charming clothing items that look more casual and like the original thing.
You also want to keep in mind that these are very thick, warm sweaters. You should try and get one in a natural fiber like wool unless you are allergic to wool. Yet another thing you might want to keep in mind is that when you buy synthetic fibers you might be doing your health a disservice. Recently studies by the FDA have shown that some polyester fabrics and yarns contain toxins. That is because polyester is made from petroleum and metals. You can sometimes even tell if a sweater like this is toxic because they will off gas fumes. In other words, smell the sweater before you buy it. If the odor is at all rubbery or fishy smelling then it is more likely to leach toxins out into your wash water. Studies have also shown that some sweaters like this actually can start leaching toxins into your skin simply because you start sweating.
Whenever possible by unbleached wool or cotton cable sweaters. That is not only the most ecologically correct option but also the one that spares you from buying from any exploited laborers.

Vintage Hollywood Living Looks

When it comes to weddings the look of Old Hollywood is back in style. This means we will be seeing lots of silks, satins, seed pearls and big stiff bows on dresses. Shoes will be very structured and the bird cage style of wedding or hat veil will also be seeing shading bride’s eyes. This hat can be so minimalist that at times it looks just like a wedge of fabric with a comb with the veil trailing down.
The shorter wedding dress is also as not as much in style as it was last year… Gown lengths will be longer and white, yellow or light blue stockings will be in evidence again as well. The idea is to look like Sienna Miller in the movie Alfie or like Sharon Tate at her wedding to Roman Polanski.
The floor length lace gown is definitely back along with the highly glamorous updos with their vintage diamond and pearl combs.
In the winter we are definitely going to see some dresses with very high collars and diamante and pearl touches. You can also expect to see lots of darts, ruching and very fitted low cut bodices. Yet another trend will be entire sashes and skirts made out of accordion style pleating.
Pearl necklaces and earrings that are combined with triangular cuts of rhinestones are also making a comeback as is the diamond and pearl cuff.
You can also order up a custom made vintage style wedding dress or bridesmaid dress. Many used clothing stores are now selling patterns from Butterick and Vogue from those eras.
Vintage Hollywood wedding looks were also all about the hair. One trendy style is braids that wrap across the forehead like headbands; This is a slightly more hippie version of the romantic style of clothing that is now in vogue. These hair styles do get complicated as they are created with a variety of different curling irons to create different sized curls. This style is also sometimes called the Princess Look.
Wearing fake hair or a fall is also a hot wedding look. However many brides don’t like this idea and wish to feel more authentic on their wedding day. In this case you can achieve the same effect by wearing ribbons or velvet bands that crises cross or run in parallel lines across the forehead.
It is also a fashionable idea to wear a huge brooch in the shape of a flower or sunburst on the sash of the dress or on the bodice. The brooch can also be worn high up on one shoulder or as a choker on a velvet band around the neck. It can even be modeled into a simple tiara by pinning it to a velvet head band or ribbon. Some brides even wear these elegant large antique brooches on their wrists on a ribbon or they clip them onto their shoes.
